EXPERIMENTING WITH OILS & COLOUR

Ted enjoys encouraging others to paint and is very generous in sharing his knowledge and skills. As evidence of this, Ted travels around NSW running painting workshops.

Ted has run workshops in Forbes, Wallabadah, Parkes, Orange, Bathurst and Canowindra in NSW.

In these workshops Ted teaches the basics of painting using both oils and acrylics:

  • drawing – balance, perspective and interest

  • colour mixing and tone

  • actual painting approach eg blocking in of main objects and direction of light

Ted tries to break down the process to ensure that participants understand the steps and enjoy their painting experience. He also hopes that by understanding these steps participants can repeat this back in their own studios and continue to improve their painting skills.

Ted Lewis has been painting full-time for over 30 years, holding his first one man exhibition at the Hesley Gallery in Orange, NSW, in 1976 at the age of 18. Since then he has had many successful exhibitions in Orange, Bathurst, Sydney, Peak Hill, South Port (Queensland), Canberra and Canowindra. Ted has a great love of the Australian bush and takes his paints with him wherever he goes. He tries to capture the light and vibrancy of the ever-changing landscapes – landscapes that range from the colourful beaches to the brilliant reds and blues of Central Australia – the subjects are endless and the challenges many. In many of his works, Ted likes to experiment with colour to produce a more contemporary landscape, particularly in acrylics, while using oil to produce subtle changes in light and atmosphere.

Ted is one of Australia’s best outback and landscape artists and over the years, has received several awards for his work.
